” If you’re anything like many of the writers here at Musical Mathematics and have a thirst for musical magnificence, then you need to know about the work of DIY record label Well Weapon…

Originating in York and now operating across Manchester and Yorkshire, this hard-working indie has spent the past few years bringing out limited-run editions of a variety of EPs and albums from a group of carefully selected regional and international bands. The acts housed on the Well Weapon label range in style from emotional, capricious alternative rock to shimmering math, from bromantic pop-punk to virtuoso instrumentalism. It’s a fairly eclectic mix – one that reflects the tastes of remarkably dedicated CEO Fergus Coates, label co-founder Matt Calpin and the social groups to which they belong.

t’s been a busy summer for Coates and co. as the past few months have seen the addition of two major releases to the WW discography – a self-titled debut EP from Leeds-based mathy post-hardcore troupe Slow Season, and a debut album (entitled Relics) from astonishingly creative art-rockers Flails. Slow Season’s eponymous debut EP is a visceral affair, combining the heartbroken and the hearty to stirring effect with barked lyrics, At The Drive-Instyle instrumental gymnastics, wistful melodies and some proudly pop-punk vocal interplay. At four tracks long it’s truly a whirlwind, and a powerful and angst-ridden one at that. Meanwhile, Flails’ debut album Relicsis pretty much a whole weather-system, drawing on the whole mercurial gamut of a trio of particularly vivid imaginations. A variety of disparate influences are at play throughout from Cursiveto Led Zep, Grammatics to Blur, with added hints of IDM, pop, reggae and metal for good measure. Rest assured you have to hear it.

The impressive new records from Slow Season and Flails are but the latest in a long line of outstanding releases from Well Weaponwhich has included the likes of Californian math band Dios Trio, Zona Mexicana and Lost From Atlas to name but a few, alongside a couple of excellent compilations and an art zine. A constant throughout the label’s output is a strong, loving focus on product design. These guys know more about packaging than you could care to imagine – no jewel cases here. You can expect to find any CD, tape or record they put out to come delivered in something beautiful, be it an envelope, a sleeve, or a brown paper package tied up with string. Add into the equation the fact that Well Weapon also have a discerning approach to graphic design (many of their releases are adorned by the likes of the Edinburgh-based Workhouse Press team and artist Aled Haywood), and you’ll understand why we think Well Weapon are truly adding value to the music they’ve loved since they were kids. “
